Can Skin Tags Be Prevented, and What Causes Them Anyway?

Your dermatologist may refer to them as acrochordons, papillomas, fibroepithelial polyps, filoform, or pedunculated benign moles, but most people refer to these bothersome blights as skin tags.

They are very simply an overgrowth or hyperplasia of the epidermis or outside layer of the skin. They often occur as you grow older and are usually most prominent in middle age. Nothing has been proven to cause them but some conditions, such as being overweight, are thought to encourage their growth. Insulin fluctuations are also thought to be one of the possible causes as well as high levels of growth factors such as during pregnancy.

Skin tags normally occur most often in the eyelid area, the upper chest, and the groin, although they may actually pop up pretty much anywhere you have skin, so that leaves a lot of real estate open.

There is no known prevention per se but what you can do is watch for them and when they start to appear (they appear first as a tiny bump), and then as soon as you can see a tag is forming with a small stalk that attaches it to the skin, snip it off with fingernail clippers or small scissors. It's best to do this early because they larger you allow them to grow, the more painful the excision of them will be.

If you wait too long you may have to have them removed at an office visit to your dermatologist, which will of course cost you money and, quite simply, is just a bother. But if you do have them taken off they will normally either freeze them off or excise them. It's fairly painless so not much to worry about.

So although skin tag causes can vary, they are not dangerous and not usually anything to be too worried about other than the cosmetic issues.

How to Remove Skin Tags - What is the Best Way to Get Rid of Skin Tags on the Eyelids?

Many people suffer from the common problem of small skin growths, called tags, which occur most often on the neck, under the arms, on the eyelids, under the breasts, and on the chest and back. They can really occur just about anywhere but these are the most usual places, and most people prefer skin tag removal rather than just leaving them alone.

Anyone can suffer from this problem, and it is said that just about half of the population experiences one or more at some time in their adult life.

As a matter of fact it is such a common issue that you will find scores of home remedies floating around in books and online. Some methods will work and some are just "old wives' tales" and shouldn't be taken seriously.

Many people experience skin tags on their eyelids and, more so than any other area, this seems to be a difficult area to treat at home. For the tags found on the chest or the back or even under the arm, it is relatively easy to just snip them off with a sterilized pair of nail clippers. However, the very tiny tags on the eyelids are problematic due to their size and location. I'd be a bit wary of using a sharp instrument that close to my eye, as you may find yourself with additional problems much worse than the original tiny skin growth.

Actually, you don't really have to do anything at all as these growths are benign and will not cause any harm. You can just leave them alone completely and not have to be concerned at all. But the fact is that most people simply don't like the looks of them and wish to have them removed, which is understandable.

If you do a little searching online, you will read that you should go ahead and use the usual home remedies on the eyelid tags, but in actuality it is really better to see your physician and have them removed in the office. Skin tag removal performed by your doctor is quite painless and takes only a few minutes of time.

Safe and Easy Ways to Remove Skin Tags at Home

Almost everyone who has ever had one of these aggravating things wants to know how to remove skin tags at home. They sure are annoying aren't they? And definitely not anything you would want to display to the world!

And yet not only are they there on your skin bothering you, but now you are faced with the dilemma of whether you should go to the doctor or not. Surely once you step foot into the doctor's office you are going to be looking at a large bill since most offices consider removing a skin tag to be merely for cosmetic purposes.

The fact is these things are not only unsightly but they can be quite painful as well when they catch on things or rub on your clothes. So just what can you do about them from the comfort of your home without having to go to the bother and expense of seeing your physician?

I have found the best way is simply to snip the little skin growths off with a small pair of scissors or even nail clippers. Now, this is if they are tiny! Don't try this if they are larger tags because they may bleed quite a bit and you'll be looking at problems of infection and so forth.

As far as how to remove skin tags that are larger, you may want to try something like a piece of thread tied around it. This cuts off the blood flow and the tag will eventually turn black and just fall right off. Again, though, this can be a bit painful as it goes through the process. But some people will do anything to avoid a trip to the doctor's office.
